FAQs
Frequently asked questions about yoga
What happens in a Yoga Class?
Yoga classes traditionally last for 90 minutes and include gentle ‘centring’ preparation building to more strenuous asana followed by a period of quiet for pranayama (breathing practice) and relaxation or meditation. All asana have modifications ensuring that they can be safely performed. The style of class varies; sometimes there are flowing sequences and at other times postures are held for increasing lengths of time. See class descriptions for more information.
What do I need?
All equipment is provided by White Horse Yoga Centre. However, most people prefer to buy their own, especially their mat. You are welcome to borrow equipment or you can purchase your own directly from White Horse Yoga. It is advisable to bring your own blanket for the relaxation part of the class.
What should I wear?
You should wear comfortable, loose clothing such as leggings and a t-shirt. Avoid anything bulky. It is a good idea to wear layers as the practice of yoga can make you quite hot.
Am I too old for yoga?
No, yoga can be practiced at any age. It is important, however, to find the right class for you. We offer various classes which differ in intensity. Check with us if you are uncertain about which class would most suit your needs.
Do you offer drop in classes?
No. Please read the section in bookings relating to this.
Some people say that Yoga is a religion – is it?
No. Yoga is not a religion but it is a spiritual practice. The basis of yoga is to work on all aspects of the person – mind, body and spirit. Please refer to ‘What is Yoga’ for a more comprehensive explanation.
What kind of Yoga do you teach?
All of our weekly classes are Hatha Yoga which means that you will be working in a practical way with postures, breathing etc. However within Hatha Yoga there are various different styles such as Iyengar, Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow and so on. Please refer to the timetable for an indication of class style.
Is it OK to eat before a class?
No. Avoid eating anything for 2 hours before your class. If you need to eat then ensure that it is a very light snack. Yoga can be very uncomfortable if you have eaten a big meal.
Should I bring a drink to class?
It is suggested that drinking negates some of the benefits of a yoga practice and that you shouldn’t drink until after the class has finished. However, some people get very thirsty and so drinking small amounts of water is fine.
